I just had to share what pleasure & fun I'm having raising my 19 mnth old grandson (N). I live in a granny flat with my son (K) occupying the house above, from Thursdays to Sundays (N) lives upstairs with his dad. (K) works 6 days a week, dawn to dusk basically, which means I'm left holding the baby - so to speak. Not sure if this makes me nanny or mummy but either way it's a lot of fun.
Being a single mum of 2 boys from ages 10 & 12, I think I wasted too much energy coping with the day to day struggle instead of simply enjoying my kids. As they grew older I regretted this and now they have sons of their own, I have time on my hands and I'm reaping the reward of having babies and toddlers around me again. I'm determined this time I won't make the same mistake, it doesn't matter if the place is a little dusty or the washing on the line gets wet from the rain, it can all be fixed later. My theory now is as long as the floors clean and the dishes are done its time to share the company of my grandkids.
N is a typical boy who has a daredevil attitude, and a very creative mind which means I need to think just as quickly to stay ahead of him. He loves to dance which of course means I get to dance with him ( aerobics wiggle style is very good exercise ) no loss of weight yet maybe its all the little snacks I need to keep the energy levels up - (sigh) ah well.
Some of the things I'd forgotten were that 30 cm legs can climb 100cm stools, 20cm arms can reach anything they want, power points are the best toys in the house, cupboards & draws are supposed to be empty, and a babies smile can be very heartrwarming. With time and wisdon I've also learnt that getting angry and stressed doesn't help with discipline, my tactic these days is distraction and rewards which has worked pretty well so far.
Playtime is heaps of fun for me as well. If I didn't have him with me I couldn't run around playing hide-n-seek, climb the pirate ship in the park, ride the merry-go-round or Wiggles cars or sleep as well as I do at night.
Yes by the end of the 4 days I'm totally exhausted, I've usually found a few extra muscles in the body that ache, but yes I'm also totally happy to recuperate and start again next week.
So much more to say but I don't want to turn this into a book.
